As well as providing the development server, Catalyst provides an environment for automated testing of your application using the Test Anything Protocol (TAP). This automation is particularly useful, as testing is a form of developer documentation and good test coverage makes bringing new developers on an application much easier. One reason behind the success of Catalyst and the rapid growth of its sizable developer community is the test-driven development process. Catalyst makes it easy to write test code by including a test directory with stubs as part of the project creation. As many of the high-quality Perl modules on the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN; http://www.cpan.org/) include extensive unit tests, as long as your application s data access layer is a thin layer around an existing CPAN module, much of your functional tests are already written for you. This leaves you to write tests that ensure that your application behaves as you expect (i.e., behavior testing). Ideally you should ensure that, as far as possible, these tests are independent of the web application. For testing that requires interaction with the web application and for pages that are not dependent on JavaScript, you can use the Perl module HTTP::Recorder to bootstrap your behavior tests.

Most popular web application frameworks come with a development server included, and Catalyst is no exception. A stand-alone development server greatly speeds the code to the implementation cycle by allowing you to rapidly verify the behavior of your code. However, this is not an acceptable substitute for writing proper tests. At some stage, the application will need to be deployed to end users. Catalyst supports a wide range of deployment options, including the popular Apache-specific mod_perl and FastCGI. FastCGI runs on a variety of web servers, including Apache, IIS, lighttpd, and nginx.
