Identifying the user of a privileged resource (authentication) and determining if that user has permission to perform a particular action (authorization) are core functions of a web application. Again, these are separately maintained packages in Catalyst under the Catalyst::Plugin:: Authentication and Catalyst::Authentication namespaces. Username and password details are stored in an implementation-specific authentication store for example, they are stored in a relational database, kept in a plain text file for an Apache htpasswd-style store, or delegated to an external source as in OpenID or Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). Configuration of authentication stores tends to be fairly involved, and so they are not as hot-swappable as session modules. Having said this, Catalyst again emphasizes flexibility. This means that if you want to allow your users to authenticate against an OpenID store, or a local database store, or a legacy database store, you can use what the Catalyst authentication system terms realms to provide several independent authentication subsystems.

By using the VERSIONS BETWEEN operator in the FROM clause, you introduce several additional pseudo columns, such as VERSIONS_STARTTIME and VERSIONS_ENDTIME. You can use these pseudo columns in your queries. By using the correct ORDER BY clause (watch the NULLS FIRST clause in Listing 9-35), you get a complete historical overview. You don t see a start time for the three oldest salary values because you created the rows too long ago, and you don t see an end time for the last value because it is the current salary value.

Indexed: PARAGRAPH fields are indexed by default. Fields that have other data types are not. Setting this attribute for a TEXT, NUMERIC, or DATE field forces Concordance to treat the values in those fields in the same way that PARAGRAPH fields are treated when the database is indexed. This process speeds searches for values in NUMERIC, TEXT, or DATE fields, but indexing these fields doesn t replace the need to use relational operators when comparing values in these fields against criteria. As new records are added, the accession field is advanced by a value of 1 with each new record. Accession numbers for records that have been deleted aren t reused. Gaps in accession fields can therefore indicate to the user or administrator that records have been deleted from a database.

For many web applications, keeping server-side logging is desirable. Logging in such a way so as not to pollute the web server logs is even more desirable. Catalyst s logging interface is compatible with other Perl logging modules, notably Log::Dispatch and Log::Log4Perl for flexible, rapid setup and logging capability.

OCR Indexing: This attribute refines the methods of indexing for a field. Because of errors that result from OCR processes, many of the textual units identified during indexing might be gross misspellings or random associations of characters that result from blemishes on a printed page. OCR Indexing attempts to remove these useless textual units from the final index.
