This section covers some Oracle-specific extensions of the SQL language. Although they might appear slightly off topic, the flashback features are simply too valuable to remain uncovered in this book. In 6, we talked about the concept of read consistency. Read consistency means that your SQL statements always get a consistent view of the data, regardless of what other database users or applications do with the same data at the same time. The Oracle DBMS provides a snapshot of the data at the point in time when the statement execution started. In the same chapter, you also saw that you can change your session to be READ ONLY, so that your query results depend on the data as it was at the beginning of your session. The Oracle DBMS has its methods to achieve this, without using any locking techniques affecting other database users or applications. How this is done is irrelevant for this book. This section shows some interesting ways to use the same technique, by stating explicitly in your queries that you want to go back in time.

Reaction is a framework built on Catalyst that is more flexible and abstract. While Catalyst applies the Model/View/Controller (MVC) design, Reaction takes this a step further and splits the model into two parts: the Domain Model and the Interface Model. The Domain Model is (for most purposes) a representation of the business of a part of your application. The Interface Model is the representation of the mode of interaction with the Domain Model. Splitting up the extra model stage into MMVC (for Model/Model/View/Controller) is what provides Reaction s flexibility. While it is built on top of Catalyst, Reaction is a separate framework that provides you with a greater level of abstraction for your business rules. This in turn means that your application code can be used not only for the Web (although this is where Reaction development has concentrated to date), but also for other representations of the same workflow (e.g., command-line programs and traditional GUIs).

This chapter covered the basic steps of creating a new Concordance database, loading it, and securing it. In practice, more time would be devoted to planning the structure of the database before any data files were created. Furthermore, additional time would be spent on validating the load file, to ensure data isn t malformed. However, many of the steps outlined in this chapter are common to every development cycle: the database must be created as an empty shell and data must be loaded into it. Securing the database, although highly recommended, isn t a requirement. In future chapters, topics touched on briefly here will be expanded and clarified. The next chapter will focus specifically on database creation, and setting field-level properties.

Note The flashback query feature may need some configuration efforts before you can use it. This is the task of a database administrator. Therefore, it is not covered in this book. See the Oracle documentation for more details.

Before we start our flashback query experiments, we first create a temporary copy of the EMPLOYEES table, as shown in Listing 9-31. (The listing is generated using SQL*Plus). This allows us to perform various experiments without destroying the contents of the real EMPLOYEES table. Now that you have a good idea of what Reaction is, we d like to address what it isn t: Just a form validator: Although it s easy to validate your forms by using Reaction, this is only one of the many things Reaction can do for you. An Ajax library: While Ajax can be used in your application with no negative side effects, it is not remotely related to how Reaction functions. A CRUD framework: We presented code for performing create, review, update, and delete (CRUD) functions by hand in 6. Initially, Reaction was developed using CRUD as a proof of concept for code reuse merely because that is one of the most common and well-known use cases. It has since evolved to accommodate many other needs of a typical user interface. Throughout this chapter, we will build a CRUD application from Reaction s building blocks, and then we ll demonstrate how to customize and extend it.
